Aloo chop is also known as Batata wada in Maharashtra and Aloo banda in Madhya Pradesh. This is one of the breakfast easily available even in streets of these states. But what makes the difference is the combination with which people it. Aloo chop in Orissa is eaten along with puffed rice wherein it is mashed into it and mixed with onions, tomatoes, green chilli, mustard oil, matar/channa/chole jhol and a pickle of your choice turning it into an extremely chatpata flavourful dish.


  • Mashed potato ¾ cup ( Boil potato and simply mash)
  • Ginger-garlic paste 4 tsp
  • Oil 2 tbsp
  • Panch poran 1 tsp
  • Green chillies 2 medium
  • Turmeric powder ½ tsp
  • Red chilli powder ½ tsp
  • Curry leaves few
  • Gram flour ½ cup
  • Water ½ cup
  • Salt to taste


Step 1

Prepare a batter of gram flour and water. Add a wee bit of salt.


Step 2

Heat oil in a kadai then put panch poran, green chillies and curry leaves and once it crackles then put ginger-garlic paste, turmeric powder, red chilli powder and salt. Sauté till it leaves oil. Then put mashed potatoes and cook till all the ingredients blend well. Turn off the gas and let it cool.


Step 3

Once this mixture has cooled down make small round balls. Dip it in the gram flour batter that has been prepared. Deep fry it till golden brown.

Step 4

Serve this with coriander tomato chutney, tamarind chutney, mustard oil, chole gravy (optional), chopped onions, tomatoes and green chillies.
